Arc Achievers!
Kaleb just became a teenager a few weeks ago. He is a very mature young man who attends the Treffert Way School and started coming to our after school program in August of 2023. When we first met Kaleb he was a very private person. He really didn’t want to be at the Arc and made that very clear on day one. He wanted to stay in the lobby and look at his phone. He wasn’t interested in anything else and didn’t want to be a part of our group. We convinced him to come to one of the rooms, but that was as far as he would go. He just wanted to be left alone with his phone, until his dad picked him up.
After a few days of waiting things out, Kaleb overheard us making something for cooking class. He made the comment that he would really like to make some
applesauce. The next week, we made applesauce. Chef Kaleb jumped right in. Not only did he help us make the applesauce, he also took the lead in all the
preparation! He measured out the sugar and cinnamon. He stirred, sliced, diced, mashed, and microwaved. Kaleb made sure we made the best applesauce on the
planet. He wasn’t wrong. It was good!
Since that day, Kaleb has been involved with many of our cooking projects. He also has revealed a great talent for clay. Once a month we have a wonderful lady,
named Jeni, visit our youth group. She is from Imagine That Art Studio in Waupun. Jeni has been teaching our kids all about clay. Kaleb loved his first class so much that he didn’t want it to end.
I often have the privilege of picking Kaleb up from school. He greets me with a big smile and says, “How is your day going?” It is always a good day when Kaleb is
around. Don’t get me wrong, he is still a teenager, and he still loves his phone. But he likes a whole lot of other things, too. He might even like the Arc!
